Happy Birthday JT

December 3, 2010

No it’s not Justin Timberlake’s birthday!

Today is my dear friend James G Thornley’s birthday! I’d like to take a few minutes to tell you about him.

He is an excellent chef and a BBQ master. Takes him forever to clean the grate though.

He loves adventure and has traveled the world.

He enjoys canning vegetables, even when he has stayed up until 4am partying the night before.

He grew up on a farm and still enjoys a good pony ride.

He's feisty though his bark is much worse then his bite.

He has more friends than anyone I know...

...ironically he will not join Facebook! ...ironically two hot birds and a Turkey.

He enjoys a good hike, here he is on a Haleakala in Maui...

...and here he is on Piestewa Peak in Arizona

He is quite the swinger!...

... incidentally he also enjoys golfing.

He and actor Michael Keaton share a similar profile.

He is thoughtful...

...and always has a rebel yell chambered and at the ready.

A few little known facts about James. He raised birmingham roller pigeons in his youth and used to show them at the PNE!. His favourite pigeon was named Bernice, sadly she was attacked by a hawk while James was training her. He was an extra on 21 Jumpstreet, Johnny Depp often stays at James home while in Vancouver!. Okay that’s not true at all, but he was on 21 Jumpstreet. He enjoys the odd pint of beer and occasionally dips into a glass of Crown Royal.

Seriously though Jamie you are truly a great friend, you have a big compassionate heart and your loyalty never waivers. You have learned to endure my close walking in the mall, my incessant arm bars and my steam rolls while on vacations.

Happy Birthday buddy!

@indi_gone

Today marks the beginning of the Eastside Culture Crawl so it seems only fitting to showcase one of my favourite artists.

You all met Indigo a few posts back when she painted an installation in my loft space.

I twittered @indi_gone (as you do these days) asking if I could swing by her studio space and make some photos. She kindly obliged so I packed up my gear and walked over to her place of work in the heart of the downtown eastside.

I’ve only met Indigo twice now, this time like the last with a big welcoming smile on her face. She gave me a quick tour of the studio which is home to approximately 20 artists, 10 on the top floor and ten on the bottom. Indigo’s space on the bottom floor and close to the drafty front door is a perfect mess. Beautiful pieces of art tucked away on shelves, stuck to walls and leaning up against bookshelves share the room with among other things, Christmas lights, an east coast lobster trap hanging from the ceiling and an art deco swivel chair that Indigo intermittently moves back and forth from to assess and re-assess her latest masterpiece.

The following images document my hour or so hanging out and watching Indigo make hundreds of careful brushstrokes. They are in no particular order and include a few HDR shots as well as a slightly flawed but interesting pano of the entire space.

If you’ve been thinking about buying a piece of art this would be the weekend to do it, and Indigo would be the artist to buy it from. Culture Crawlers will find her work at Gallery Atsui, 602 East Hastings @ Princess. Or, tweet her like I did @indi_gone and ask her about the dozen or so pieces she has sitting in her studio space looking for homes. Hands off the rollerskating girl though, that’s meant to be mine someday.

Borrrringggg…

…I swear I have interesting new posts coming soon, they include an artist in her studio space, broom parking, Vancouver’s flea market and vintage New York stripper polaroids. Until then here are a few images I made but never posted from Maui this year.

Track Lighting

September 10, 2010

My friend Tyler and I made a last minute decision to go out and shoot a few nights back. We decided Parker Street studios and the neighbouring railroad tracks in east van would be interesting subject matter. If you have ever been to the Eastside Culture Crawl you will recognize this studio. If you haven’t been to the culture crawl be sure to check it out this November.

In other news, I sold a print today. I always enjoy selling a print. I vote for more people buying prints!

I won’t get into detail explaining any of these except to say that the pigeons where annoyed with us and that I like number’s 7 and 9 the best. You?
